Your operations team site survey is coming up shortly! Please arrange to be available for the site survey because we will need access to all electric panels on the property, the attic or underside of the roof structure, the inside of the garage (if one exists), the rooftop, and 360 degrees around the home. The surveyor will also want to discuss possible equipment and conduit run locations with you at this meeting. These details will aid our designers in the final design of your project and help to ensure we are meeting your goals with regard to function and aesthetics.

Your solar system design and permit plan set will be completed by our design team. In this stage, our designers will create a detailed construction plan based on the sales agreement’s scope of work and major materials, the data collected at the site survey, and input from you the customer given at the time of sale and survey. The design process can take up to a month depending on our workflow and project backlog.

We're excited to let you know that our team is applying for the building permit for your project! During this process, we work to gain approval to install and operate your new solar system, including a building or electrical/solar permit from your city or county. This permitting process can take anywhere from 1 to 5 weeks, depending on the jurisdiction. During the permit process, you may not receive communication updates from us unless we need additional information from you.

At this time, our administrative team will share with you certain documents required to gain approval and register your solar and/or battery system with the local utility. You will be asked to sign documents allowing SLP, as your contractor, to navigate the project registration with the utility on your behalf. The utility will automatically move you to a new rate plan that reflects how your solar and/or battery activity coexists with the grid and whether you pull or push electricity off of or on to the local electric grid.

Please note you may see a projected commissioning date on the interconnection documents. This is not an estimated install date, it is simply a standard date required by the utility (6 months from application submission).

Once we have received a stamp of approval from the permitting office, we will prepare the equipment and reach out to schedule your installation. If there are any household items that need to be moved or any landscaping to be trimmed we will ask that you do so ahead of your proposed installation date. Depending on the size of your project and the complexity involved, the installation can take anywhere from 1-3 days. In the days and weeks leading up to your installation we will be sourcing your project materials and planning the logistics and communication involved for a smooth install. On the day of your installation, it is advisable for you to be home to greet the team to walk through the installation locations for the solar, battery, conduit paths, and ancillary equipment such as disconnects. Often the homeowner needn’t be home for the full installation, so please be sure to discuss the need for you to be present or not with your SLP scheduler. Our team will usually arrive between 8-9am, but in predetermined cases it could be earlier or later to accommodate your situation.

You will also be emailed your milestone 2 (M2) invoice once your material is delivered and installed at your home.

To close-out the open permit and to have your solar and/or storage system properly documented, we now need the installation work done by SLP to be inspected by the City or County in which you reside. Our inspection coordinator will contact you when your inspection has been scheduled to make sure the date proposed will work for you. The inspection may take place anywhere from 1 to 3 weeks after your project has been installed. All inspections require SLP to be on site as the host and we strive to show up ½ hour ahead of the inspection window given to ensure we can safely set up a ladder and open electrical equipment to be ready for the inspector. It may be necessary for you, the customer, to arrange access to parts of the yard and the garage (if one exists), and in some cases you may wish to be home. It is best that you, the customer, not get involved in the inspection, but rather please allow SLP to engage with the inspector to streamline the process and address any questions or concerns that may arise.

Your inspection has passed - woohoo! Next up, we will request permission to operate (PTO) from your utility company. This process can take anywhere from a couple days to several weeks. We have an interconnection specialist who works with utilities to move this process along right away, but sometimes the timeline for approval is out of our hands. Now that the utility has reviewed your signed permit, updated your account, and confirmed permission to operate by email to both you and Sun Light & Power, your solar and/or battery system is ready to be turned on!

Our team will be reaching out to confirm the utility’s approval and schedule a final walk-through. During this visit, we’ll power up your system, walk you through your apps, explain how your system works, and show you how to safely shut it down if ever needed.

For solar PV systems: we’ll show you how to read and understand your production data.
For battery systems: we’ll guide you through setting up the app, interpreting energy graphs, and adjusting your discharge rates and backup reserve levels.

After ensuring you are comfortable with your solar and/or battery system apps, we will also review your project owner’s manual. This manual is yours to keep and includes:

A copy of your stamped plans
A copy of your signed-off permit
Spec sheets for your system’s major materials
Warranty information for your system’s major materials
Guidance on cleaning your panels
Contact information for our service department
Information on how to earn a referral reward from SLP
And more!
